Bible Passage

Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. — Romans 6:12-14

Quote

Sin is the sickness of the soul, in itself mortal and incurable, as to any power in heaven or earth but that of the Lord Jesus only. But He is the great, the infallible Physician….Have we been enabled to put ourselves into his hand? We have then no more to do but to attend his prescriptions, to be satisfied with his methods, and to wait his time. — (John Newton, Letters of John Newton, p. 69-70)

3 Steps to Take

Reflect: In a world where tragedy, strife, and unrest are so prevalent, have you ever stopped to consider the root problem? While people often say that humanity is basically good, the Bible says—and our own experience confirms—that human beings are deeply corrupted by sin and drawn to all kinds of evil. It is an evil that manifests itself in cruelty toward fellow humankind and rebellion against God and his goodness.

Remember: Even though believers have new life in Christ, sin still dwells inside God’s children because they are still in bodies affected by the Fall. As Christians, we are called to a daily fight against sin by 1) turning away from evil thoughts, words, and deeds and 2) following our Savior by walking in his light and living by his Holy Spirit in a way that pleases our heavenly Father. Yet, we often fall far short of that high goal.

Rejoice: Even as you struggle against sin and are frustrated by what can often seem like slow progress toward holiness, know that your Savior is faithful. The Holy Spirit will bring you along in maturity as he continues his sanctifying work in you. Wait prayerfully on his timing for deliverance from clinging sins as you continue to repent of and fight against them. As you walk by the Holy Spirit heavenward, rejoice that Jesus has accomplished your salvation and will see you purified.
