BCL Devotional: Be Gentle as Christ Is Gentle — Isaiah 40:11

He will tend his flock like a shepherd;
    he will gather the lambs in his arms;
he will carry them in his bosom,
    and gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:11)

Be gentle to others as he is gentle to you … Be gentle to the lambs of the flock; be gentle to those whose grace is little, whose faith is weak, whose strength is small, whose infirmities are many, whose sorrows are keen, whose trials are severe, whose positions and paths in life are difficult and perilous. Steps to Take

Reflect: Consider Jesus’ gentleness as the good shepherd who leads his sheep and calls them by name. How can we imitate his gentleness?

Remember: Harshness and anger seem easy for so many people. There are few restraints on social media—feelings erupt and seem to carry over into face-to-face interactions. Gentleness easily eludes us. As Christians we are called by God to be gentle and kind (2 Tim. 2:24; Tit. 3:2). Gentleness is a fruit of the Spirit who dwells within us (Gal. 5:23). Yet, how difficult it is to control our emotions! Nevertheless, we are called to love others, and even our enemies! The root of gentleness is love. Though we struggle to be gentle, it is Jesus who leads us to it with love, for “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5).

Rejoice: Therefore, love one another with kindness and gentleness. Care for others as God cares for you. Guard your words by the wisdom of God that is “peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17). Remember that a gentle tongue is a tree of life (Prov. 15:4).
